Carpentry
From framing to finish carpentry
Some projects require carpentry of one sort or another, and a carpenter can do the heavy lifting especially if you want to do the finish work yourself. With the tools and experience, a carpenter can frame out a new shower and install
the backer board, cut a new exterior window, or build a doghouse.
Carpenters don't typically require licensing, though they may be unionized, especially if they work for a builder. They are typically specialists of one sort or another focusing on trim, cabinetry, rough, or framing. A finish carpenter whose specialty
is built-in custom cabinetry probably would not be the logical choice for a deck project. A few key points to consider include:
- Before hiring a carpenter, have plans drawn up. An architect or designer can supply working plans the carpenter will use.
- References are critical, so ask then call to check with previous clients.
- The agreement should specify the scope of work, materials, and warranties for labor and materials.
- Make sure your carpenter is insured before any work starts. The carpenter should provide copies of any licensing, certifications, and insurance you ask for.
A competent carpenter can be a tremendous asset to many small to medium home improvement projects. By qualifying him in advance, you can ensure that your improvements are well-executed and will enhance your home's value and comfort.
