Insulate for extra climate control

You have probably thought about adding insulation to your attic or walls to reduce heat transfer in your home, but another way to get more efficiency from heating and air conditioning units is to add or upgrade the insulation on your ducting system. By increasing the R-values of insulated ductwork in your attic or basement, you can improve flow through of conditioned air significantly and further reduce heating and cooling costs.

Two common types of insulation material are available. Fiberglass is readily available in various R-values, affordable, and relatively easy to install if handled properly. In settings that are moisture-free, it´s very effective. For areas where moisture could be a potential issue, however, radiant barrier systems are preferred. Radiant barrier products are basically space blankets for your home; their reflective surface inhibits heat transfer. that helps keep your home warm in winter and cool in summer. Where your HVAC ducting is concerned, radiant barrier products pack considerable insulation value, and are easy and clean to install.

Hiring an insulation installer

To save time, you may want to hire an HVAC insulation contractor. The installer should take into account the shape, size, and construction type of your home, the regional climate, your family´s size and habits, the size and efficiency rating of existing heating and cooling units, as well as the type of energy use to fuel them.

Make sure you get an estimate from several contractors that specifies the R-value to be met, type of material to be used, and the amounts required. That provides a basis for making an effective comparison, especially if the contractor suggests different materials. Find out how the materials will be installed and don´t hesitate to ask questions.

Check the contractor´s licensing, insurance, and references to make sure that the company you choose is qualified to perform the work. Ask for a copy of the contract and make sure you understand the warranties as well as your responsibilities.
