Remodeling Using Universal Design
Handicap accessibility and aging in place just the start
If you or a family member needs to accommodate a handicap or disability, a
universal design remodel can incorporate all the features needed to make your
home more accessible without compromising your home's aesthetic appeal.
Remodeling to make your home more accessible is a big job and one that needs
the thoughtful consideration of professional home improvement contractors with
experience meeting the demands of individuals with limited mobility or other
physical impairments.
To accomplish your project, whether it is to meet the needs of a disabled family
member or to redesign for aging in place, our qualified, licensed contractors
and designers can help.
Compare their qualifications and skills against your needs using the following:
- Ask for verification of contractor licensing, insurance, Worker's Comp,
as well as any warranties.
- Find out the type of experience they have with the kind of remodel you have
in mind. For example, if you are planning to revamp your home to accommodate
your needs as you age, check to see if they have experience working with a
Certified Aging in Place Specialist. For other types of disabilities, their
experience in universal design would be invaluable.
- Ask for references. Contact the references and find out the type and extent
of the work done. Verify that the changes were appropriate and usable. If
possible, meet with the owner of the reference site and inspect the types
of changes made. You may also come up with a few new ideas.
- Do additional research on universal design and how it can benefit you.
