Water, trickling and cascading in the light, with its soothing, distinctive sounds, can add character and ambience to your garden in a way no other feature can. No wonder, then, that many homeowners add pools, ponds, and fountains to corners of their yards as small private oases and major focal points. And like many home improvements, the range of styles and costs are vast. All the more reason to plan your new water feature carefully.

Issues you'll want to consider as you plan your ultimate outdoor water features include:

  • Location. Where do you want to place it? Will it be a front yard attraction or a backyard water feature? Do you want a courtyard fountain for a simple garden pool?
  • Type. Waterfalls lend themselves particularly well to sloped yards while pools and ponds are suitable for more level yards. Are you thinking about a water garden or a wall fountain? Simple, complex, or a combination?
  • Style. The architectural style of your home and the formality of its landscaping will also drive the effect that you aim for.
  • Size. The overall size of the area will determine the outside limits of the water feature you choose. Waterfalls because of their vertical character often fit in small spaces. Fountains are contained and work well in courtyards. The larger your space the larger your features can be, but even small yards can accommodate a fountain with a rills to a small pool to excellent effect.

Before selecting your contractor, be sure to ask what licenses he carries and make sure that any licenses required in your state are current and in good standing. Also, insurance coverage needs to provide liability and Workers' Comp. Your contractor may have a portfolio of completely projects. If so, review it carefully to make sure your vision and his experience and skill match. Finally, don't hesitate to call his references to verify his workmanship. If you qualify your contractor, before work starts, you'll be more likely to have a perfect oasis when the job is completed.
