Water Main Contractors
Heads up before a water line breaks
If your home needs work on its water supply, waste lines, or sewer connections, the best time to get estimates is before the situation becomes critical. Contractors who specialized in the installation, repair, or replacement of such lines often levy
emergency rates when work needs to be done immediately. Unfortunately, it seems like it's a holiday weekend when the water main finally gives up the ghost.
To make sure you and your home don't suffer more than necessary, find the main water shutoff valve. In the event of a burst pipe, 50 gallons of water could flood your home, so finding that valve and turning it off could make the difference between
an inconvenience and major damage.
Many homes that get water from a city water bureau will have the meter and turn off valve located together, usually at the front of the property. Identify the valve type and the tool needed to turn the valve off. If practical, store the tool in a plastic
zipper bag with the valve itself. Practice turning the water on and off to see the effect, before it becomes necessary. By rehearsing, you'll be ready to turn it off at a moments notice.
If your neighbors with similar homes are having problems with water mains, you might want to consider calling in an expert to assess the probability of breakage. Doing so allows you to evaluate contractors ahead of time, check references, and verify
licensing and insurance. Best of all, it makes it possible to plan for repairs instead of having to contend with expensive emergency bills.
